This is a great opportunity to support a church that is actively engaging their local community through city renewal, and to help stop one of our modern day tragedies. If you attend Thursday night there is a film screening “Kavi”, a short film on modern day slavery in India.

Great video here by the folks at Redeemer City to City. I’ve been very encouraged by Tim Keller and the movement he has been involved with. One great fault of western Christianity is the lack of a holistic view of salvation and faith. Meaning we’ve only focused on reconciling peoples relationship with God and left out many of the other relationships that the sin has corrupted. To be “For the City” as many churches today claim calls for a drastic shift in methodology. ”Seek the welfare of the City”

Tom Wright (or N.T. Wright) has caught the brunt of much controversy lately. For me this does not overshadow the fact that he has been one of the most prominent current theological writers on the coming Kingdom and a heavy theolgical influence in my life. Tom recently wrote a new “Advent Oratorio” that you can find here Advent Oratorio. Thanks Justin Taylor for first posting this N.T. Wright’s “Advent Oratorio” – Justin Taylor

The opening lines from Tom’s work

“When the deaf hear the song of the new-born swan

and the lame go dancing on gold;

When the pauper raises his cheerful glass,

And the blind exclaim at the bright green grass,

And the hills bow down for the Lamb to pass,

Then the tale will at last be told.

It‟s a tale of a world put right at last,

it‟s the news of justice done;

It‟s the story the dead are eager to learn,

it‟s the song of the hedgerow, the stream and the fern,

it‟s the whisper of a long-lost Lord‟s return,

Of heaven and earth made one.

When the axe is laid to the root of the tree

(As the Baptist saw long ago);

When the greedy are blamed, and the violent tamed,

and the liars are named and the lustful ashamed,

and the rights of the poor are at last proclaimed,

Then the River of Life will flow.

And the Tree will grow its healing leaves,

and the Advent bell will ring;

And the stars will sparkle their glad applause,

and the seas will lend their voice to the cause,

while the angels unlock the ancient doors,

To welcome the coming King.”

From the Garden to the City is not a new concept. It’s not original. And it’s nothing that those in past years have not talked about within the Church and town halls. It’s the thought that all of history is found between two perfect times, a perfect Garden and a perfect City. From a garden we came and to a city we go. Within that we find the Kingdom of God breaking in and changing all areas of life. The quote by Abraham Kuper says it well, “there is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry: ‘Mine!,’” and there is not one square inch that has not been tainted by the effects of sin. In that, we find ourselves in a strange tension, one of fallenness and redemption. In this tension we find our topic and the thrust of our project. In the future months we will be releasing a series of short films around this idea… Follow our blog for future updates on the progress, and some thoughts on Christ’s renewal of all things.
